Apple’s long-rumored iPhone Fold might break the mold, literally. New CAD renders suggest a foldable iPhone that’s both more compact when shut and much wider when open. The big headline? Its aspect ratio doesn’t play by Samsung’s rules.
iPhone Fold may feature a much wider aspect ratio
While Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 sticks with a tall 21:9 display up front, Apple seems to be going the opposite direction. According to recent leaks, the iPhone Fold could feature a 5.3-inch external screen that’s roughly as wide, but noticeably shorter. It may look more like a stubby passport than a stretched-out phone.
Through an accessory manufacturer, CAD files have leaked showing Apple’s foldable clocking in at 120.6 x 83.8 x 9.6 mm when closed. That’s significantly wider and just a bit thicker than Samsung’s Fold7. But height-wise, Apple has shaved off 38 mm, giving the iPhone Fold an unusually squarish footprint.
Wider when open, closer to an iPad mini
Open the iPhone Fold, and things get even more interesting. Its 7.76-inch main display spreads across 167.6 x 120.6 mm making it 24 mm wider than Samsung’s counterpart. The aspect ratio leans more toward an iPad mini than a traditional phone, offering a different experience for multitasking, video, and reading.
That width might finally make split-screen multitasking actually pleasant. It also sets Apple up for a different use case than Samsung’s “phone that becomes a tablet” pitch.
Key iPhone Fold dimensions vs competitors
Here’s how Apple’s foldable stacks up:
- Closed dimensions: 120.6 x 83.8 x 9.6 mm
- Opened display: 7.76-inch, 2673 x 1920 px
- Thickness opened: 4.8 mm
- Secondary display: 5.3-inch, 2088 x 1422 px
- Wider than Galaxy Z Fold7 by: 24 mm (when opened)
iPhone Fold may borrow from iPad and iPhone Air
The renders hint at Apple mixing DNA from its existing devices. The rear camera setup resembles the iPhone Air, while the open display’s shape brings the iPad mini to mind. A fingerprint sensor on the right side adds a practical touch, though Face ID fans might not love that shift.
Still, it’s all rumor for now Apple hasn’t confirmed a thing. But the repeated mention of a wider aspect ratio and the detailed CAD leak suggest Apple’s approach is nearly locked in.
Bolder, wider, and not here yet
The iPhone Fold isn’t just folding in half it’s stretching expectations sideways. Apple’s choice of a wider aspect ratio stands out in a field crowded with tall-and-narrow foldables. If the September 2026 release holds, the wait is long but the shape of things to come might just be worth it.
